Crime Prevention With Personal Safety Kits

Crime Prevention

Preventing crime is not about following a concise list of crime prevention measures. Instead, it’s about using common sense and awareness to prepare for the worst, without becoming paranoid.
These personal safety tips can help protect you against potential threats.

Pay AttentionBe alert and aware of your surroundings. Scan the parking lot before you leave the building. Pay attention to people or vehicles that seem out of place, and have your keys in hand to avoid fumbling as you approach your car. Staying vigilant will keep you attuned to potential dangers and empower you to make smart decisions.

Guard Against the DarkDarkness makes it more difficult to see muggers and burglars approaching. This time of year, as we fall back to end Daylight Savings Time, the days get shorter and the nights get longer, making those who are out and about more vulnerable. Be smart, and stay in well-lit, familiar areas when possible.

Carry ProtectionBurglary, rape, assault and other crimes typically happen one-on-one, bad guy versus victim. Pepper spray is an ideal personal self-defense product because it’s easy to use, inexpensive and highly effective, while high-voltage stun guns have similar traits. Both temporarily disable attackers, allowing you to escape.
If you aren’t comfortable carrying self-defense products that inflict pain, at the very least, carry a personal alarm that emits loud, siren-like noise to attract attention and help.

Follow the Buddy SystemThe buddy system our parents emphasized when we were children is still an effective safety measure. A woman walking alone at night makes a much more attractive target than a group of four women walking together. Strength in numbers works to your advantage.
During National Crime Prevention Month and throughout the year, personal safety is about being vigilant and aware, without being paranoid or living in fear. If you notice unfamiliar people or activities that seem suspicious — and if you’re willing to call attention to them — your awareness ultimately benefits everyone.

Pepper Spray 101 With Personal Safety Kits

Pepper Spray 101
Pepper spray is a popular choice for personal defense that has been around for decades. But it’s not your only compact, self-defense option. Pepper gel is a newer formula that contains the same active ingredient — a naturally occurring substance in cayenne peppers called oleoresin capsicum (OC) – but instead of being contained in a liquid, the pepper is suspended in a sticky gel.
Understanding the differences between pepper spray and pepper gel can help you choose the personal defense option that’s right for your needs. Here are some key differences to consider.
Spray patterns
When you fire pepper spray, the diameter of the spray pattern tends to spread out as it sprays toward your target. Because pepper gel is a thicker formula, the gel sticks together instead of spreading out, firing in a targeted ballistic stream pattern.
Effective range
Pepper gel has a sticky viscosity that allows it to travel further than pepper spray droplets. Most pepper gels have an effective range of up to 18 feet, compared to 12 feet for a standard pepper spray.
Cross-contamination
The potential for cross-contamination is one of the biggest differences between pepper spray and pepper gel. If you fire pepper spray outdoors, windy conditions could blow droplets back at you. Cross-contamination is also a risk if you deploy pepper spray indoors with bystanders nearby.
Pepper gel has a slight advantage over spray for reducing the potential for cross contamination and blowback, as its sticky formula holds active ingredients within a concentrated stream focused toward your attacker.
Effects on an attacker
In the end, OC is OC, and whether it hits an assailant as spray or gel, it’s going to cause an intense burning sensation to target’s eyes, nose, throat and skin. These effects usually last about 45 minutes – giving you time to escape from a dangerous situation. However, while both are debilitating, pepper gel sticks to the assailant’s face, forming a temporary blindfold, and rubbing it increases its potency.
The strength of the formula can also determine the effects of the product. Most spray and gel formulas range from about 2 percent to 10 percent OC, although pepper gels tend to be higher strength.
Now that you understand the differences, arm your self with pepper spray or pepper gel, whichever best suits your needs, so you are prepared wherever you go.

Personal Alarm, Stun Gun or Pepper Spray--Whichever It Is-Be Prepared!

What it is: A personal safety alarm is a small device that emits a loud shriek.
Pros: The devices are easy to use, and you don’t have to worry about aiming them. A simple pull of a pin or push of a button will activate the device.
Cons: If you are in a remote area, loud noise probably won’t deter a potential attacker. You also may have to rely on someone who hears the alarm to call for help, and the noise doesn’t disable the attacker.
What it is: A stun gun is a weapon that delivers a strong shock through its prongs.
Pros: A stun gun can be used anywhere on an attacker’s body. The shock will incapacitate the attacker and give you time to flee. Stun guns come in a number of sizes, are often lightweight, are easy to use and can be clipped on a belt. The devices can be used several times before needing to be recharged.
Cons: Stun guns are only effective if they make direct contact with an attacker. That means you need to get very close to your assailant, which could give him or her plenty of time and opportunity to do you harm.
What it is: Pepper spray is a device that emits a chemical that, when sprayed on an attacker, will irritate the eyes, causing tears, pain and temporary blindness.
Pros: Pepper spray can thwart an attack from up to 15 feet away. It’s easy to carry, can be clipped on clothing or a bag and comes in a number of shapes and sizes. Pepper spray is very easy to use — just point and shoot.
Cons: Wind could prevent the chemical from hitting an attacker and cause the chemical to blow back into your face.
No matter which type of self-defense method you choose, it is important to practice using it so you are comfortable operating it in a stressful situation. In addition, before purchasing any item for self-defense, check with your local police department to find out if your community has any restrictions.

Uber / Lyft / Cab Driver--Be Prepared For Anything (Pepper Spray / Pepper Gel)

"As a woman, how safe would you feel as an Uber driver?" That's the opening question from a recent KTHV article.
Just 14% of Uber drivers are female. When asked, women report they'd feel unsafe driving due to their gender.
However, Uber driver Elizabeth Thomas has some tips for women to enhance their safety.
  • Look at the star rating and don't pick up passengers with low scores
  • Install a surveillance camera
  • Carry pepper spray
  • Stay in your comfort zone (don't go anywhere that makes you feel uncomfortable, and try to drive during daylight hours)
  • Refuse or end rides if customers get "out of hand"
If you are an Uber, Lyft or cab driver considering a pepper-based self-defense product for your car, your best option is pepper gel. Boasting the same police-strength protection you've come to expect from Personal Safety Kits. Pepper gel also offers additional benefits, making it ideal for close encounters and small spaces
